KL Gastro Adventure: Day 4 – Icy Genting & Fire-y Satay

26 06 2007

A back dated series post which should’ve been finished by now. I’ve 15 days left in my holiday before moving back to a junk room, getting a new roommate, and lots of cleaning, unpacking to do.

After our market exploration, we rode the commuter to KL Sentral. I was amazed at how cheap it is to get to Genting! I bought the ticket 2 weeks ahead which cost only RM26 inclusive of:

Return bus transfer
Return Genting Skyway transfer
Genting Outdoor Theme Park Day Ride Pass

Genting #1

1 1/2 hours later, we were already standing in line to board the Skyway. We didn’t have to queue to buy tickets. Heehee. The weather was superb when we reached the top. Actually it was extremely cold! But for a change from the stuffy humid weather down there, the freezing windy air feels damn good. Until 2 hours later, when the fog began to thicken and 90% of the rides had to shut their operation.. we waited in line huddled together like 2 lost penguins. We were shivering mad as the cold wind keeps hitting us. Thank God we came out of there alive to catch this beautiful sunset…

Genting #2

Genting bakery

Ah, borrowing the warmth from the bakery. They have a sumptious looking selection of pastries. Cost at least RM3 above.

Muar chee #2

Muar chee #1

Muar chee #3

We stopped and bought a pack of RM5 muar chee with assorted flavours – pandan, peanut, original and black sesame. We chose to have only the black sesame. The presence of black sesame flavour was almost undetectable. Moreover, it has this shell of black glutinous flour surrounding a core of white glutinuous flour instead of entirely a ball of glutinous flour made from black sesame paste.

After a frightening bus ride with a puny brained driver who thinks he’s handling a low gravity vehicle, we arrived at KL Sentral in one piece. To soothe our nerves, more food required =D

Gopala satay #1

Jian heard about Gopala’s vegetarian satay from Ho Chiak and we went in search of it along Jln Tun Sambanthan. We had to ask for direction because it was located behind the row of shophouses after walking from the interconnecting walkway to Sentral monorail. We walked through to the back of the monorail station, turn right and found a shop with a satay griller. Bingo!

Gopala satay #2

One taste of the mock meat is all that’s needed to convert me into a vegetarian food lover ;) It tastes so damn good! Even yummier than real thing and satay kajang for that matter. The peanut sauce has curry powder in it which makes it different from the Malay version. Orgasmic stuff, I tell you. However, you gotto eat it fast or the soy bean flavour begins to emerge once cool. RM5 for 5 sticks.

Gopala - fresh milk

I had a glass of fresh milk which curdles and form a layer of plasticky thing after leaving it untouched for awhile. The milk is so delicious and smells outrageously good. I kept sniffing from the cup after I emptied it. Hehe :P OMG, I have to come back to this place ^_^

*non-halal* Pork Trotter Lunch in Butterworth

26 06 2007

Stall #1

Mom asked if I wanted to eat at an old school no frill place in Butterworth. My immediate reaction is a yes! I wouldn’t pass an opportunity like this. See the photo below? :) Yeah, rustic shophouse with wooden exterior and sliding metal doors. My favourite kind of dining place.

Stall #2

Dad’s client had introduced him to this secret location. Then he brought mom here. A year later (now only they tell me ah!), I get to see and try for myself. I almost couldn’t make it here. My parents thought it has shifted when they couldn’t find the road which leads to this place. It’s located parallel to the highway that’s heading to the cargo loading dock. Just before the entrance on the side to the ferry terminal, dad instinctively turn right and there it is!

Pork trotter meal

People throng this place for their well known delicious pork trotter. They started out as an economy rice stall but became famous for this meat dish that’s slow cooked in dark sauce with a hint of herb (star anise maybe?). Their selection of other side dishes is very few and basic. Keeps your palate clear to savour their specialty :)

Pork trotter

The meat is extremely succulent and tender! I can’t have enough of it. The gravy may look watery and run-down but it’s actually quite flavoursome. After almost drenching my rice with it, we requested for more gravy and the taukeh kindly refill for us.

We asked for lean meat, so I’m not sure if the fatty leg part will be given if we had not specified? It cost RM12 just for the pork. The total comes to RM18 including the side dishes and drinks.

Sunway Carnival Mall

After that, a detour to the new Sunway Carnival Mall before going back, just to well, find an excuse to visit a new mall. Nothing much to see. Very few clothing stores. A walk in the basement where eateries are reveals restaurant names that are carbon copy of Queensbay Mall’s, just fewer.

For those who’s interested to visit this coffeeshop, I hope Wikimapia can help you :P (since I’m so poor with the direction). The location of the shophouse is mapped. It’s located just outside the BORR.

Father’s Day Lunch

25 06 2007

Father’s Day was celebrated with a lunch treat at Foong Wei Heong Restaurant at Jln Sri Bahari.

Steamed groundnuts

The munchies are not the usual peanut but steamed groundnuts dressed with soy sauce. Yum yum! So addictive.

Spring roll

Spring roll halve

As starter, their signature spring roll. I don’t know what’s stuffed in there :P Not very special, shouldn’t be their signature dish. The flavour of all ingredients is a clashing disaster, IMO.

Vegetable soup

Vegetable soup with century eggs. Tasty and appetising, after I got rid of the eggs. The funny thing is that, it’s served on a plate. I didn’t get much soup in the end.

Tofu

Braised beancurd is delicious. But I’ve had better at kopitiam tai-chow.

Pork brisket

Stir fry pork brisket in plum and assam sauce. The most delicious dish on the round table. It’s crispy outside and has all the flavour inside. The nicest I ever had. A must order :)

Drunken chicken

The drunken chicken is okay, rather ordinary. The meat is tender and not fatty.

We also had cod fish. The cod is fresh and very silky smooth. Yummy! And also sambal stir fried asparagus which is I ate a lot coz I’m an asparagus nuts.

The total comes to RM 223 for 11 adults and a baby who only had a taste of the fish.
